Today I took delivery of an exciting parcel. Inside, carefully packed to avoid any damage in transit, was a selection of archival-quality art prints ordered a few weeks ago. Most of the prints feature paintings that have already found their forever homes.

When I was first getting really serious about painting, I had several very ‘serious’ ideas about what constituted real art. I thought I should be painting from life rather than using photographs for reference. And I felt like I should be painting representational art; paintings that depicted scenes, still life or other things from the real world.

When you create art, it can sometimes feel challenging to get seen. The art world seems like a closed book, and the opportunities, exhibitions, celebrity and big money go to a very small number of artists. What does it take to learn how to succeed as an artist? I know that when I look at the size of the mountain I have to climb, I can easily become discouraged from even taking the first step.

Art by famous (and represented) artists is a great investment, but it is out of the reach of most people, simply because of the price. However, there are still plenty of reasons why you should buy original art, and why it’s easy to buy original art online.

I carefully consider each element of a painting as it develops. What it does mean is that when I start with one idea, the painting quite frequently takes an unexpected turn.
